From May 18–22, 2026, Photo Reason Academy partners with FUJIFILM X-SPACE to present "City Exploration · Shanghai," a workshop led by Magnum photographer Mark Power.
Over five days, Mark Power leads participants through a complete, in-depth photographic exploration of the city of Shanghai. The workshop helps participants rebuild their understanding of images and ways of seeing, grasp the full logic from project design to editing and sequencing, and develop their own photographic language.
The programme includes a dedicated session shooting alongside Mark Power, giving participants a close look at how a world-class photographer works.
About Mark Power
"Now that everyone in the developed world seems to own some form of camera, a different space has opened for documentary photographers. It's a space free from specific events, where there are different expectations, where it is first and foremost about ideas. Now we can all take pictures, with varying degrees of ability, it's what we do with our cameras that counts."
Mark Power was born in England in 1959. He studied painting (1978–1981) but soon turned to photography, working on editorial and charity commissions over the following decade. His complex, meticulously crafted images—often made with a large-format camera—established him as one of the pioneers of British photography. He began teaching photography at the University of Brighton in 1992, eventually becoming Professor of Photography until he left teaching in 2017.
His years at the university coincided with a shift toward long-term, self-initiated projects that ran in parallel with large-scale industrial commissions. Across a four-decade career, he has published 14 photobooks.
Mark Power's work is exhibited in galleries and museums around the world and held in numerous significant public and private collections. He became a nominee of Magnum Photos in 2002 and a full member in 2007.

Workshop Structure
A five-day workshop taking the city as its throughline for a complete, in-depth photographic exploration of Shanghai.
Day 1 - 2026.05.18
In-depth personal work sharing & Ideas Development Lab
- 10:30–13:30: Mark Power Workshop — in-depth sharing of personal work
- 14:30–17:30: Ideas Development Lab — each participant introduces their background, project ideas, and goals for the workshop
- Evening: personal shooting time — participants shoot freely across the city and its surroundings
Please arrive in Shanghai on your own before May 18.

Shooting with Mark Power
- Full day (10:30–17:30): shooting together with Mark Power

Group review & personal shooting
- 10:30–13:30/14:00: Group Review — each participant presents a selection from the previous day and receives constructive feedback from peers and mentor
- Afternoon: personal shooting time across the city and its surroundings

RMB 14,800 per person (early-bird RMB 12,800 for registrations submitted before May 4, 2026)
This fee covers the workshop programme only and does not include transportation, accommodation, or other personal expenses during the workshop.
