"Unknown Site" Photography Workshop 01

Photo Reason Academy destination workshops are held only in cities and regions where the leading mentor has lived long-term or has substantial creative experience, ensuring participants receive genuinely valuable guidance. This edition is led by Photo Reason partner and photographer Roban Wang.

This is a workshop whose destination is not disclosed in advance — a real creative field opened up among ruins, history and industrial heritage. The location is a small city in central Zhejiang that was once the community of an old state-owned mining enterprise: the old factories, mine tunnels, workers' hospital, staff school and dormitory blocks still stand, where the structures left by industrial civilization overlap with the traces left by time. Roban once completed a long-term project here about the intertwining of industrial heritage, historical memory and personal fate.

If you have taken many photos yet can never enter a true "project" state, are drawn to ideas like "industry" and "history" but don't know how to turn them into your own visual language, or feel lost when facing a complex space, this workshop is for you. Within a structurally complete, historically layered and visually rich industrial community, we will learn how to build an observation system in an unfamiliar setting, turn space into narrative, and shape a clear project prototype within limited time — a real stress test of your practice, and a real project kickoff.
